TENTS

Tents

About the game and how to play

Tents, or Tents and Trees, is a calm but tricky logic puzzle. The grid has trees, and every tree needs exactly one tent right next to it — above, below, left or right. Tents may never touch each other, not even diagonally. The numbers around the grid tell you how many tents are in each row and column.

How to play

  1. Place one tent directly next to each tree (up, down, left or right).
  2. Tents never touch another tent, not even diagonally.
  3. The numbers outside the grid show exactly how many tents are in that row or column.
  4. The puzzle is solved when every tree has its own tent.

Tips

  • Clear the ground first: put an X on every cell in a row or column whose number is 0, and on every grass cell that doesn't touch a tree above, below, left or right. No tent can ever go there.
  • After placing a tent, mark all eight cells around it with an X, since no other tent may touch it, not even diagonally.
  • Compare each number with the space left in its line. If a row needs 2 tents and only three free cells in a row remain, the tents go on the two outer cells, because two tents can't sit side by side.
  • Look for trees with only one free neighbour left: that is where their tent goes. Once a tree has its tent, that tent can't serve another tree, so re-check the neighbouring trees.

Frequently asked questions

Can one tent be next to two trees?

It can touch several trees, but it belongs to only one of them. The grid needs exactly as many tents as trees, and the game checks that every tent can be paired with its own tree; a tent that can't be paired is highlighted.

Why doesn't the Hint button place a tent for me?

In Tents, Hint is a correctness check rather than a reveal: it tells you whether every tent placed so far is right and, if not, flashes the first wrong one. The number of checks is limited per game: 5 on Easy, 4 on Medium, 3 on Hard and 2 on Expert.

Which board sizes does Tents offer?

Easy is 8×8, Medium 10×10, Hard 12×12 and Expert 14×14. The daily puzzle uses a 10×10 Medium board, is the same for every player and changes at midnight Baku time (UTC+4); you can catch up on missed days in the archive.

Do you ever have to guess to finish a Tents puzzle?

No. Every puzzle, including the daily, is verified to have exactly one solution, so the trees and the numbers around the grid are always enough to place every tent by logic.
