NONOGRAM

Nonogram

About the game and how to play

Nonograms (also called Picross, Griddlers or Hanjie) are logic puzzles that turn numbers into pictures. Each row has numbers on its left and each column numbers on top: they tell you how many cells in a row are filled in that line, in order. Play the clues against each other to work out which cells are filled and which are empty — and when you finish, the picture appears in full colour. There is a picture album with hand-drawn animals, food, Azerbaijani landmarks like the Maiden Tower, a four-tile mosaic, colour puzzles, a daily puzzle and a time attack mode.

How to play

  1. Each number outside the grid is one block of filled cells in a row; “3 1” means 3 cells, at least one gap, then 1 cell.
  2. Tap a cell to fill it; drag along a row or column to fill several cells at once.
  3. Mark cells you know are empty with ✕ (right-click on a computer).
  4. When every clue is satisfied the puzzle is solved and the picture is coloured in.

Tips

  • Start with big numbers: wherever a block of 7 sits in a row of 10, the middle 4 cells are always filled — the cells where its leftmost and rightmost positions overlap.
  • If the clues plus one gap between each add up to the line length, the whole line is known — for example “4 5” in 10 cells.
  • A filled cell touching the edge pins the first block against the wall: fill its full length from there and cross the cell after it.
  • When a line is complete, cross out its leftover cells and go straight to the lines that cross it — every new cell gives another line something new.

Frequently asked questions

How do you earn stars in Nonogram?

Every album picture has 3 stars: one for solving it, one for finishing with no hints and no mistakes, and one for beating the par time for its size (1 minute for 5×5, 5 minutes for 10×10, 12 minutes for 15×15).

How is a colour nonogram different from a normal one?

In a colour puzzle each number has a colour and its block is filled with that colour. Two blocks of the same colour need at least one empty cell between them, while blocks of different colours may touch. You pick the colour from the swatches under the board.

What are helper mode and lives?

With helper mode on, a wrong mark is caught straight away, the cell is set right and you lose one of 3 lives; run out and you start the picture again. Turn it off in the settings to play classic: nothing is checked, and the picture only appears once the grid is fully correct.

Can every nonogram be solved without guessing?

Yes. Every album picture, the daily puzzle and every random puzzle is checked to be solvable to the end with row-and-column logic alone, so each one has exactly one answer and you never have to leave anything to chance.
